They process, store, and transmit data, enabling the functionality of digital devices and systems across almost every industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chips are used in <strong>computers and smartphones<\/strong>, where processors act as the \u201cbrains\u201d that control all device functions. They are also essential in <strong>memory and storage devices<\/strong>, <strong>sensors<\/strong>, and <strong>communication systems<\/strong> that support wireless connectivity, including 5G and the Internet of Things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the <strong>automotive industry<\/strong>, chips control engine management, driver assistance and safety systems, battery management in electric vehicles, and in-car infotainment. In the <strong>medical field<\/strong>, chips are used in diagnostic equipment, imaging systems, wearable health devices, and medical implants. Key opportunity areas include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Development of chip design and verification software<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Chip design services<\/strong>, both as subcontracting for international customers and as the creation of new intellectual property<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Chip design for in-house products<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Chip packaging and testing<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In the broader electronics value chain, Estonia is also active in <strong>printed circuit board (PCB) assembly<\/strong> and the <strong>manufacturing of electronic end products<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although chip factories are a central part of the semiconductor industry, none are currently planned for Estonia. Building and operating a modern fabrication facility requires investments of several billion euros, advanced infrastructure, and long-term industrial scale. As a result, chip fabs are typically operated by only a few global companies, such as <strong>TSMC<\/strong>, <strong>Samsung<\/strong>, and <strong>Intel<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-body-regular-font-size\">Estonia\u2019s strategic focus is therefore on <strong>design, software, testing, and system-level innovation<\/strong>, where smaller countries can compete effectively and create high value without the need for massive capital investment.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-style-group-spacing has-global-padding is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile is-image-fill-element\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/kiip.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/iStock-1468266144-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2525 size-full\" style=\"object-position:50% 50%\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kiip.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/iStock-1468266144-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/kiip.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/iStock-1468266144-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/kiip.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/iStock-1468266144-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/kiip.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/iStock-1468266144-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/kiip.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/iStock-1468266144-2048x1152.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>Even though Europe\u2019s chip sector is currently lagging behind Asia and the USA, the goal of EU initiatives is to significantly increase Europe\u2019s share of the chip value chain from about 10%. Europe currently has an important market share in chip fabrication equipment (lithography tools), where the Dutch company ASML is the global leader. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>European companies are also leaders in chip design software. Considering China\u2019s investments in the chip sector, Taiwan\u2019s politically complex position, recent US protectionist measures, and, on the other hand, the ever-increasing demand for chips due to technological progress, further development of the sector in Europe is crucial to achieve greater technological sovereignty.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Chips, also known as semiconductors or microchips, are the core building blocks of modern electronics.
