This was one of the central questions at Baltic Electronics Conference 2026 (BEC2026), where the The Estonian Chip Technology Competence Center (KIIP) joined a panel discussion on the future of intelligent electronic systems.

The panel, “Intelligence from Edge to Silicon: IoT, AI and Chip Design”, brought together Ander Allas, Andres Mellik, Arno Kolk, Huber Flores, Jaan Raik and Vahur Kampus. The discussion covered practical AI applications, Europe’s technological competitiveness, product reliability and the skills needed to develop intelligent electronic systems.

Practical AI and Europe’s opportunities
Andres Mellik, Programme Manager at KIIP, sees significant near-term potential in small, energy-efficient AI models running directly on sensors and microcontrollers. Applications such as predictive maintenance, anomaly detection and sensor-based vision can reduce data transmission, improve response times and extend battery life. Compared with general-purpose autonomous systems, these focused applications are easier to test and bring into practical use.

Choosing where AI processing takes place is another important design decision. Depending on safety, latency, privacy, energy and cost requirements, different functions may run on the device, at a local gateway or in the cloud. Mellik emphasises that these decisions should be made for each function rather than for the product as a whole.

For Europe, Mellik sees opportunities in trusted, application-specific intelligent systems for industrial automation, healthcare, mobility, energy and defence. Estonia can contribute through system-level design, secure electronics, rapid prototyping and testing. At the same time, Europe needs to address dependencies in semiconductor packaging, manufacturing, design tools and intellectual property.

Turning promising technologies into products also requires closer cooperation between research, industry and end users. This is particularly relevant for dual-use applications, where security, supply-chain requirements and qualification can make the transition from prototype to market more demanding.

AI-assisted design, reliability and engineering skills
AI tools are increasingly supporting chip and electronics design, from generating testbenches to debugging and evaluating design alternatives. However, Mellik stresses that AI-generated results require independent verification, while critical architecture and safety decisions must remain under human control.

Reliability also extends beyond product launch. Connected AI-enabled devices need secure updates, repeatable testing and continued monitoring to maintain safety and performance throughout their lifetime.

These developments create new demands for engineering education. Engineers need to understand how sensors, embedded systems, AI models and hardware work together. Mellik highlights the value of practical projects developed jointly by universities and companies, where students solve real problems within defined energy, performance and cost constraints.

Programmes such as TalTech’s Chips for AI course support this approach. KIIP contributes by connecting companies with semiconductor design expertise, development tools and opportunities for cooperation with research institutions.

Baltic Electronics Conference 2026 took place on 6–8 October in Tallinn, marking its 20th edition.

How can advances in artificial intelligence, connected devices and chip design be turned into reliable, commercially viable products?
